The MadChimp Series - All Show Notes

Updated: Nov 12, 2019

Welcome to the experimental mini-series produced by Luke Targett and myself. We decided to put together a few 10 - 20 minutes episodes offering some of the tools, tips and tricks that we've picked up during our time as working producers.

Here's the show notes for the entire series and we really hope you get a lot out of it. If you want to see the video version check out Madman Music's YouTube page here -

You can, of course, subscribe to the whole Studio Chimp show on iTunes, Spotify, Overcast and other podcast platforms.

Episode 1 - Time Management - The One Thing

We're starting off tackling time management. Overwhelm is one of the biggest issues facing musicians who can't afford a team of people around them. Getting your time management right can be the difference between a successful career of getting things done and moving forward in the industry or running around in circles never really progressing.

This first episode focuses on The One Thing which is principle Luke and I turn to on a weekly basis. Every Monday we call each other and discuss the One Thing We are focussing on. If you enjoyed the episode and would like to learn more I can definitely recommend picking up the book 'The One Thing' by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan.

Episode 2 - Time Management - Batching

Next up on our Time Management section we're discussing batching. Batching is an incredible way of getting months ahead in your work, clearing the decks and organising those seemingly massive projects into manageable chunks of your life. It's how got an entire series of podcasts done in a day, how we set up our social media and how we get through hundreds of emails.

It's such a simple tool that when used properly can help you get seemingly superhuman amounts of work done quickly and effectively.

Episode 3 - Time Management - Delegation

In this episode, Luke and I chat about the use of delegation and how it can literally make you more money for doing less work, help you focus on what it is you're best at doing and streamline your workflow.

The top players in the game delegate all the time, with websites like fiverr and digital transfers being so easy, we think you should be as well.

Episode 4 - Time Management - Work Life Balance

You've got to get that balance! Listen to find out how we try to achieve a work-life balance in this crazy industry that requires so much from you.

Episode 5 - Finance - Budgeting

This is an area I think is so important for musicians and well... anyone. It's not something we're taught that much about and yet it's crucial for having a stress free life with enough money to get buy and potentially even retire at some point.

Whether you have very little, or you are getting a lot, not managing your money properly can be devastating further down the line. Have a listen to how Luke and I manage our finances in this episode of The Studio Chimp Show.

Episode 6 - Finance - Eco Systems

This is possibly the most important thing to develop when you are a working musician. The idea of ecosystems within your music career is the thing that stops me having a heart attack in the middle of the night or worried that a client will pull out of a project leaving me a big hole in my income.

Check out this episode to learn about exactly what an eco-system is and how you can apply it to your music career.

Episode 7 - Finance - Investing

Yes, even frugal old me can get carried away when 'investing' in new gear. However, it doesn't take a lot to get started and the tools you have may well be enough to begin your fruitful career as a musician.

In this episode we look at what are sensible investments, explain ROI and show you how I managed to start Studio Chimp with nothing more than a laptop and a couple of old monitors.

Episode 8 - Marketing - Content Creation

Trying to get the right content that represents your brand can be a bit of a minefield. Knowing when, where and what requires a little thought but both Luke and I have tried and tested theories on what types of content you should be posting regularly and how you can effectively get more reaction and more importantly, more record sales or clients from how you conduct yourself online.

Episode 9 - Marketing - 3 Types of

Now we're looking at what type of content and how often you should be uploading it. In this episode, we look at how to grab peoples attention with the WTF Factor, how to read your audience, giving value and how to build habits around consistency, creating months of content efficiently and how to create a perfect cake.

Episode 10 - Marketing - How to Create An Avatar

You are an avatar. I am an avatar. Unbeknownst to us, some marketing company, or someone with a small business has created a version of us in their head and use it for marketing. Ever wondered why your advertisements are so oddly specific with what you want. If they've done their jobs properly, the people behind those adverts have created a perfect avatar for their product and you just so happen to be it. Listen to this episode to figure out how to create your own.
